Nokia N95 8GB

I was moseying around on the web a few months ago in search of a new mobile phone.  I deserved one – my old one (a trusty old Motorola Pebl) was falling apart.

Feeling wild, I decided to investigate other brands, having had three Motorolas in a row.  I settled on a Nokia N85 8GB.  What attracted me?  Well, I’m as big a sucker as the next one, so I’ll admit, their advertising is pretty smart.  All that shiny black plastic really draws you in.  The storage capacity was a selling point.  And, the HUGE sharp colour screen, against the black, well… you know what I mean.  Plus, I do like a few gadgets.  I really do like things that do their job well, and I’m not afraid to put the money up for it.  But, it must be up to the job.

In any case, the deal they were offering was just silly.  I had to take it.  Two new phones on one (reduced) monthly tariff  for less than the price of a meal for one, with a serious amount of texts and minutes thrown in.  I’d be dumb not to see the value of that.

The phone duly arrived (early!), customer service was excellent I have to say.  So, having had this gadget for a few weeks now, how does it perform.  OK, so it has all the usual Contacts, Messaging, Camera, Web, Tools etc.  and, a nice little Map feature, which has come in handy when searching for weird addresses of clients or cafes!

Size is important.  I’m not sure if anyone else would mention this, but you can extend the clamshell-style shape while you’re talking to someone, which means that there is a greater distance between microphone and speaker, so it makes it more like a normal phone in size.

It is a little clunky, I’ll say that.  You probably should get a case or at last sturdy cover for it.  But, that’s to house the camera features, I’d guess.  I can live with that.  And, the sending of messages sometimes takes longer than I’d hope for, but you can simply close the phone and set it down, it sends probably before you’ve started properly back into Facebook…

But the real test came when I’d forgotten to bring my camera on holidays (doh!), but I had remembered my N95.  I have to say, the photos are quite something.  They are clear and sharp, colours are pretty good and I couldn’t tell the difference between them and those taken by my regular middle of the range snap-a-matic.

Finally, one thing I must rave about is the multi-media messaging.  It is just simply fab.  I admit that I don’t use it that often, but it just makes my day when I can send a pic to someone there and then.  Or, send a voicemail, rather than recording a voicemail in the normal way.

What do you think?  Have you bought a new gadget and would like to share it with someone?  Then, feel free to comment..
