I Hate Spam!

I hate Spam (my advice: turn off sound before clicking this link) and I hate spam.

Are you fed up receiving spam (unsolicited junk mail) in your inbox?  There are lots of tools and packages that will help you avoid most of it, but sometimes it seeps through…

Zimbio reported this week that Robert Soloway now faces more than 20 years in jail for spam and email scams.

Hurrah!

Want to know how to avoid Spam in your inbox?

  1. Subscribe only to things online that you REALLY want to get in your inbox.
  2. Avoid adding your work email address to any subscriptions.  You may be breaking your contract otherwise and in any case, you will give your IT department a headache dealing with all the spam that inevitably follows subscribing to emails online.  Use a free online account for this purpose.
  3. For things you may want to subscribe to, but are not sure, watch the website or blog for a few weeks first, to see if it really interests you.  You will often find that you change your mind, on reflection.
  4. Get a new separate email address on Yahoo (has especially effective spam filters) or Googlemail or similar to use simply for subscribing to emails.  There are lots of free email providers online.
  5. Yahoo allows you to select an option that only delivers emails to your inbox from those people whose email addresses are stored in your Contacts list.  All others are deleted or go into your Junk Mail folder.
  6. If you use Outlook to read your email, make use of its Junk Mail, Spam and Rules options to limit the amount of spam you get.  If you are unsure, email us for more information.
  7. For cleaning up your inbox, look for the unsubscribe link at the bottom of most emailed subscriptions.  Click it and follow the link to remove your email address from the mailing list.  You sometimes – annoyingly – get a confirmation email to deal with as well.  The better sites will simply send you nothing further.
  8. If all else fails, get a new (free) email address.  Remember to import your old contacts list from your old email provider to your new one and email all your contacts to let them know you are now using that address instead.  Your old account will be deactivated after about three months of inactivity and you will no longer be able to login.  It would be good to finally delete your Contacts list from the old account too.
